Section 4 · What Families Say

What People Usually Mean by This Name

Sumayya (سمية) is a name with one of the highest theological resonances in early Islamic history. It belongs to Sumayya bint Khayyāṭ, the slave-woman of Banū Makhzūm, mother of the celebrated companion ʿAmmār ibn Yāsir, and one of the first seven people to embrace Islam in Mecca. She and her husband Yāsir were tortured by their masters in the early Meccan persecution to make them renounce their faith. They refused. The Prophet ﷺ passed by their torture and is reported to have said: 'Patience, family of Yāsir, your appointment is Paradise.' Sumayya was killed by Abū Jahl, who pierced her with his spear; she became the first shahīda, the first martyr, of Islam.

The name's etymology is traditionally derived from the Arabic root س-م-و, to be high, to be elevated, to rise, the same root as ism (name) and asmāʾ (the Names of God). Sumayya carries the meaning of 'the elevated little one,' the diminutive of high station. The name is widespread across the Arab world, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Indonesia, and the wider Muslim diaspora, often given to a daughter as an explicit invocation of the first martyr. The variant Sumaiya is also common.
