What Sumayyah means
Sumayyah (سُمَيَّة, Sumayya) bint Khayyāṭ (d. 615 CE) is honoured in Islamic tradition as the first martyr of Islam (awwal shahīda fī al-Islām) — an enslaved woman of Makka who, with her husband Yāsir ibn ʿĀmir and son ʿAmmār ibn Yāsir, was tortured by Abū Jahl for refusing to renounce her faith in the early Makkan period. She was killed by a spear-thrust to her side and died defending the words lā ilāha illā'llāh. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ passed by them during their torture and consoled the family: "Patience, family of Yāsir — your appointment is the Garden". Her son ʿAmmār became a Companion of the highest rank, of whom the Prophet said "ʿAmmār is filled with faith to the marrow of his bones". The root س-م-و is the root of samā (heaven, height) and ism (name). Sumayyah is widely used as a feminine name across the Arab world, Turkey (Sümeyye), Pakistan, and the Muslim diaspora — a name that carries the foundational martyrdom of the faith. Variants: Sumaiya, Sumayya, Sumaya, Sumeya.

What Sumayyah asks of its bearer
The reading of Sumayyah begins with Seen: an outward turn toward asking. At the interior, Meem brings an interior of love and water; Ya brings an interior of strong selfhood. These are the hidden weathers of the name. The Alif resolves the name: everything resolves back to the source. The work of the name is to let the first martyr live through every letter — so that her life takes the same shape as her name.
