What Ruqayya means
Ruqayya (رقية, Ruqayya) is the name of one of the four daughters of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and Khadīja bint Khuwaylid — Ruqayya bint Muhammad (born c. 601 CE, d. 624 CE / 2 AH). She was married first to ʿUtba ibn Abī Lahab, then after the family's rejection of Islam to ʿUthmān ibn ʿAffān, the future third Caliph; the couple emigrated together first to Abyssinia and then to Madīna. She died at Madīna at the moment of the Muslim victory at Badr — her funeral coinciding with the news of victory. The Prophet ﷺ honoured ʿUthmān as Dhū al-Nūrayn ("Possessor of Two Lights") because he was married in succession to two of the Prophet's daughters, Ruqayya and Umm Kulthūm. The root ر-ق-ي conveys ascending, rising, the spell or charm that lifts — and is the same root as ruqya (the prophetic invocation for healing). Ruqayya is widely used across the Arab world, Pakistan, Turkey (Rukiye), Indonesia, and the Maghreb (Roukaya, Roqaya). Variants include Ruqaiya, Ruqayyah, Roqaya, Rukaiya.
