The Iranian (Persian) form of Rayhāna (ريحانة) — sweet basil, the fragrant herb whose name is used in the Quran to describe what the believers will receive: fa-rawḥun wa-rayḥānun wa-jannatu naʿīm — 'so [for him] is rest and rayḥān and a garden of bliss' (56:89). The classical commentators read rayḥān as both the literal sweet basil that grew in early Arabian gardens and as a name for the gentle blessings of paradise.
The most weight-bearing companion-bearer is Rayhāna bint Zayd (d. 632 CE) — a captive of the Banu Qurayza tribe whom the Prophet ﷺ freed and married. She accepted Islam and lived as one of the wives of the Prophet for the last years of his life.
