Ahlem — Dreams — the Maghrebi spelling of Aḥlām.

Ahlem is the Maghrebi French-influenced spelling of أحلام (Aḥlām) — the plural of ḥulm, dream. From the Arabic root ح-ل-م, which produces both ḥulm (the dreams of sleep) and ḥilm (the patient forbearance of the wise). The same root underlies the divine Name al-Ḥalīm — the Forbearing — recited in the asmāʾ al-ḥusnā. The two senses are not unrelated: classical Arabic poetry and Sufi commentary often pair the dreaming mind with the patient one as faculties of the inner life.

The name is widely used across Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco, and the North African diaspora in France and Belgium. The most celebrated bearer is Ahlem Mosteghanemi, the Algerian novelist whose 1993 novel Dhākirat al-Jasad (Memory in the Flesh) became one of the most widely read Arabic novels of the late twentieth century. The Mashriqi spelling Ahlam is more common in Egypt and the Gulf; the Maghrebi -em ending reflects the French ear for the final nasalised vowel.

Ahlem opens with the wide Alif (ا), travels through Ḥāʾ (ح), the letter of the breathing chest, and closes with the long -em. A bearer of Ahlem is named into multiplicity — not a single dream but the plurality of imagination — and into the older Arabic linkage between the dreaming faculty and the patient one.
