The most praised, the one who praises most — the comparative form of Muhammad from root ح-م-د. Ahmad is the superlative of praise: not just praised, but most praised, and also the one who praises most deeply.
Root ح-م-د, same as Muhammad. Ahmad is the elative form — the most in the category. In Sufi tradition, Ahmad is understood as the name of the Prophet's inner reality (the Haqiqa Muhammadiyya — the Muhammadan Reality), where Muhammad is his outward form. الفرق بين أحمد ومحمد is the Meem: Ahmad is Muhammad minus the Meem, the Meem being the letter of love and water. Add the Meem of love to Ahmad and you get Muhammad.
