Questions about finding a name
How do I find a Muslim name with a specific meaning?
Open the Meaning filter and choose one of the nineteen themes, from light and mercy to patience and victory. Each is sorted at the Arabic root rather than off the English, so a name that merely sounds the part does not appear. Combine it with a gender or a letter to narrow further.
Can I search for names by the Urdu letter rather than the English spelling?
Yes, and it finds names the English cannot. Urdu sounds ث, س and ص all as s, and ذ, ز, ض and ظ all as z, so an English S or Z flattens four letters into one. The Urdu letter filter keeps them apart.
Can I combine filters?
Yes, that is the point of this page. A girl name meaning light used in South Asia is three clicks. Choosing two meanings narrows to names carrying both; choosing two regions widens to names used in either. The number beside every option tells you what it would leave before you click it.
Are these names verified?
Every one of the 2,451 has been read against the classical Arabic lexicons, Lisan al-Arab, Taj al-Arus and al-Sihah, and against Quranic root usage. Where the classical record disagrees, the name page says so rather than inventing certainty.
Or start from one axis
Each of these is a page in its own right, with the reasoning behind the grouping: English alphabet, Urdu alphabet, by meaning, by region, the Arabic letters themselves.
