Muslim Baby Names by Region
Names travel. Each region of the Muslim world inflects its names differently, through language, prosody, and lineage. Browse by tradition.
The Muslim name tradition is not a single tradition. A name in Damascus is sounded differently from the same name in Lahore, and a name common on the Gulf coast may be vanishingly rare in West Africa. Three things shift across regions: the spelling and pronunciation conventions (Yusuf in Arabic, Yousef in transliteration, Yusufu in Hausa), the lineage of which classical or scriptural figures are most commonly invoked (the companions of the Prophet ﷺ everywhere; local Awliya and Imams in different proportions by region), and the prosodic register, the rhythm of one-syllable vs three-syllable names, the gender markings, the affectionate diminutives that develop locally over centuries. The categories below group Asrnaam's full library by region so you can browse what a tradition actually carries, not just an alphabetical list.
