Dictionary Meaning
What Rida means
Contentment, the soul's pleasing acceptance of Allah's decree — from the root ر-ض-و (radiya — to be content, to be pleased). The Quran uses this exact word in one of its most beautiful descriptions of the soul at peace, in the closing verses of Surah al-Fajr: 'O you content (mutma'inna) soul, return to your Lord, well-pleased (radiyatan) and pleasing to Him (mardiyyah). Enter among My servants and enter My Garden' (89:27-30) — the verses recited at the funerals of the righteous.
The Quran's rida is the active mutual contentment between the servant and the Lord: 'Allah will be pleased with them, and they with Him' (5:119, 9:100, 58:22, 98:8). The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Whoever says in the morning and evening, I am content with Allah as Lord, with Islam as religion, and with Muhammad as prophet — Allah promises to make him content on the Day of Judgement' (Tirmidhi).
The name Rida belongs above all to Imam Ali al-Rida (d. 203 AH/818 CE), the eighth Imam in the Shia tradition, great-great-great-grandson of the Prophet ﷺ, whose tomb in Mashhad in Iran is the largest mosque-shrine complex in the world. Used as both a male and female name. Variants: Rida, Reza (Persian), Riza, Riza (Turkish), Ridha, Ridhwan. The Arabic is رِضَا.
