The moon — the Quranic word for the lunar body. Al-Qamar is the title of Surah 54 of the Quran, which opens with the famous splitting of the moon: 'The Hour has drawn near, and the moon has split' (54:1) — referring to the miraculous sign the Prophet ﷺ showed the Quraysh in Mecca, attested in Bukhari and Muslim. The Quran also names the moon alongside the sun as a sign of Allah: 'It is He who made the sun a glowing light and the moon a derived light, and determined for it phases' (10:5).

In classical Arabic poetry the moon — particularly the full moon (badr) — is the highest standard of beauty, applied to the face of the beloved and to the noble human character. The Companions described the Prophet ﷺ himself as kal-qamar laylata al-badr — 'like the moon on the night of the full moon' (Tirmidhi).

Used as both a male and female name across the Muslim world. The masculine Qamar is more common in the Arab world and South Asia; the feminine Qamar (or Qamarunnisa, 'Moon among Women') is common in Pakistan and India. Variants: Kamar, Kamer (Turkish), Qamer, Qamr. Famous female bearer: Qamar Bano, the Pakistani singer. The Arabic is قَمَر.
