Dictionary Meaning

What Hajar means

Hājar (هاجر) is the Arabic name of Hagar, the Egyptian woman who became the second wife of the prophet Ibrāhīm and the mother of Ismāʿīl — through whom the Arabs trace their descent. The classical Islamic tradition gives her a much higher status than the brief biblical account: she is the matriarch of the Arabian people and the heroine of one of the foundational ritual reenactments of the Hajj.

The narrative preserved in Bukhārī (and elaborated by al-Ṭabarī and Ibn Kathīr) recounts how Ibrāhīm, by divine command, left Hājar and the infant Ismāʿīl in the barren valley of Bakka (Mecca). When her water ran out and she feared for her baby's life, she ran seven times between the hills of Ṣafā and Marwa searching for help — until the angel Jibrīl struck the ground and the spring of Zamzam burst forth. Every pilgrim performing the Hajj or ʿUmra reenacts her search in the saʿy, the seven-fold passage between the two hills now enclosed within the Masjid al-Ḥarām. The name is widespread across the Muslim world.
