Dictionary Meaning
What Feruza means
The Uzbek-Tajik form of the Arabic-Persian fīrūz (فيروز) — turquoise, the precious blue-green stone mined for millennia in the mountains of Khorasan and Nishapur. Turquoise carried meaning across the Islamic world as the stone of protection and of victory: fīrūz is also the Persian word for victorious, and shahs and sultans wore it as both ornament and talisman. The Uzbek -uza ending feminises the name in Tashkent and Samarkand register.
One of Uzbekistan's most beloved girls' names through the twentieth century, also widely used in Tajikistan, the Uzbek diaspora in Russia, and among Uzbeks in Saudi Arabia. Pairs in Uzbek families with Madina, Munisa, Zarina, Dilnoza.
Variants: Firuza, Firouza, Fairuza, Feyruza. Same root: Fairuz/Fayrouz (the legendary Lebanese singer's stage name); Firoz/Firouz (masculine, victorious). Compare Lulu (pearl), Yaqut (sapphire), Marjan (coral) — the gem-name family.

The Portrait
What Feruza asks of its bearer
At the opening of Feruza stands Fa: an outward self that articulates. Beneath the surface, Ya brings an interior of strong selfhood; Ra brings an interior of repetition and momentum. These are the inward currents the name carries. The Alif resolves the name: everything resolves back to the source. What this asks of her: to let turquoise pass through this whole sequence — opening, interior, close — until it is no longer a label but a way of being.
