Dictionary Meaning

What Chaima means

Chaima is the Maghrebi French-influenced spelling of شيماء (Shaymāʾ) — 'the one distinguished by a mole or mark,' from the Arabic root ش-ي-م. The classical Arabs treated a small, well-placed beauty mark as a marker of recognition and distinction; shaymāʾ named the woman whose face was thus marked. The name belongs above all to ash-Shaymāʾ bint al-Ḥārith, the Prophet's foster sister — daughter of his wet-nurse Ḥalīma as-Saʿdiyya — who was taken captive after the Battle of Ḥunayn (8 AH / 630 CE).

When she was brought before him, ash-Shaymāʾ identified herself by reminding him of a childhood incident — the day, in the desert of the Banū Saʿd, when he had bitten her shoulder during play. The Prophet ﷺ recognised her, spread his cloak for her to sit on, and offered her either a return to her people or a place in his household. She chose her people, and was sent home with gifts. Chaima is widespread across Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, and the Maghrebi diaspora; the Mashriqi spelling is Shaymaa.
