What does Abdul mean? Abdul is not a name by itself. It is عبد, servant, joined to ال, the, and it waits for the divine attribute that follows: Abdul Rahman, servant of the All-Merciful. Read alone it means only servant of the, with the of left open.

What Abdul actually says

The root is ع-ب-د, to serve and to worship, and the two senses are the same act in Arabic. عَبْد is the one who does it. Attach the article and you get عبد ال, servant of the, which is a phrase holding its breath. Every Abdul name is that breath completed. Abdul Aziz is the servant of the Mighty. Abdul Hakim is the servant of the Wise. The person is not being named after a quality; he is being named in relation to the One who holds it.

This is why the second word carries the meaning and the first carries the posture. Two boys named Abdul Rahman and Abdul Qadir are not sharing a name. They share a stance, and are pointed at different attributes of God from it.

Outside the Arabic-speaking world, forms and passports have done what forms do. A registrar hears two words, writes the first in the given-name box and the second in the middle-name box, and a generation later Abdul is living as a full first name in Bradford, Marseille and Detroit. Nothing is wrong with the man who carries it. It is worth knowing, though, that the name is asking a question the second word was meant to answer.

Why it becomes Abdur, Abdus, Abdun

Arabic sorts its letters into sun letters and moon letters, and the article ال behaves differently in front of each. Before a moon letter the ل is pronounced, so عبد العزيز is read Abdul Aziz. Before one of the fourteen sun letters the ل falls silent and the letter after it doubles instead, so عبد الرحمن is read Abdur Rahman, never Abdul Rahman, however it is spelled on the certificate.

The written Arabic never changes. Only the reading does. Both romanisations you will see in family documents are therefore defensible, and neither is a mistake.

Is Abdul a complete name on its own?
Not in Arabic. Abdul is عبد ال, servant of the, and the definite article is left hanging.
