What Abdullah means
Servant of Allah, slave of God — the most beloved of names to the Prophet (ﷺ), who said the best names before Allah are Abdullah and Abd al-Rahman. The name is a compound: Abd (عبد — servant, one who submits) and Allah (الله — the divine name encompassing all names and attributes).
Abd comes from root ع-ب-د: to worship, to serve, to submit completely. A true abd is not diminished by this submission — he is elevated by it. The Arabic understanding of servitude to the divine is the highest station a human can occupy.
The divine name Allah is the all-comprehensive name, containing every divine attribute. To be Abd Allah is to serve the totality of the divine — not one attribute but all of them.
