What People Usually Mean by This Name
The cream of the cream, the choicest, from the root ز-ب-د (zabada, to be the cream, to be the choicest part). Zubd in classical Arabic is the cream that rises to the top of milk, used metaphorically for the best of anything. The diminutive feminine zubayda means 'the small precious cream', the term of endearment for a beloved daughter who is the very best her parents have.
The name belongs above all to Zubayda bint Ja'far ibn al-Mansur (d. 216 AH/831 CE), the wife of the Abbasid Caliph Harun al-Rashid and the mother of Caliph al-Amin. She was one of the great patrons of the Islamic golden age. Her most famous achievement is the construction of the road from Baghdad to Mecca, the Darb Zubayda, with wells, milestones, and rest-stations every few miles, used by pilgrims for centuries. She also funded the water-supply at Mecca itself, the Ayn Zubayda, which carried water from the mountains east of Mecca to the city of pilgrims and continued to function until the 20th century.
