Dictionary Meaning
What Sema means
Sky, the hearing, sama — from Arabic/Turkish sama (sky, heaven; also the spiritual listening in Sufi music). In Turkish Sufi tradition, the sema is the whirling ceremony of the Mevlevi dervishes — the spiritual hearing and turning. 'And in the heaven is your provision and what you are promised' (51:22). Sema names the woman who looks upward and hears the divine.

The Letters
Reading Sema through Ilm ul Huroof
Every Arabic name is a sequence of ontological principles. The first letter governs the outward self. The middle letters govern the interior. The final letter governs how things resolve.
Sin (س) — expansion. Meem (م) — love. Alif (ا) — origin. Hamza (ء) — strong beginning. Sky: expanding upward, holding in love, originary, strongly beginning.
"A name is not a label assigned after the fact. It is a structure of principles that begins its work the moment it is given."
In the tradition of Muhyiddin Ibn Arabi
The Portrait
What Sema asks of its bearer
The first letter of Sema is Seen — an outward turn toward asking. At the interior, Meem brings an interior of love and water; Alif brings an originary axis at the interior. These are the inward currents the name carries. Sema ends in Alif — everything resolves back to the source. The bearer is asked to inhabit each letter consciously, until sky, the hearing is not what the name says but what the life shows.
