Dictionary Meaning
What Sahar means
Pre-dawn, the last hours of the night before fajr — from the Arabic root س-ح-ر (sahara — to be in the time before dawn). In Quranic and Islamic tradition, sahar is the most spiritually charged hour of the entire twenty-four. It is the time when, according to the famous Hadith, 'Allah descends to the lowest heaven in the last third of the night and says: Who is calling on Me, that I may answer him? Who is asking of Me, that I may give to him? Who is seeking My forgiveness, that I may forgive him?' (Bukhari & Muslim).
The Quran honours those who use the sahar hour: 'And in the hours before dawn (bil-as-har) they would seek forgiveness' (51:18). The People of Paradise are described in Surah Adh-Dhariyat as those who slept little, who divided their nights between sleep and standing in prayer, and who reserved the pre-dawn for the deepest seeking of Allah's pardon. The Prophet ﷺ never abandoned the sahar prayer (tahajjud), and his Companions modelled their nights on his.
