What This Reading Says About You

Qadir's letters draw from many elements at once, a full palette, not a single note. This is a name that asks its bearer to hold contradictions gracefully: warmth and steadiness, movement and depth. Running through the reading is Al-Qadir, the All-Capable, carried by a person as a capable, unruffled competence. A person named Qadir lives with more inside them than any one word can hold.

Section 4 · What Families Say

What People Usually Mean by This Name

The Capable, the All-Powerful, from the root ق-د-ر (qadara, to have power, to determine, to measure). Al-Qadir (and its intensive form al-Qadeer) is one of the ninety-nine beautiful names of Allah, declaring His absolute power over all things: 'Indeed, Allah is over all things All-Powerful (qadir)', a phrase that recurs more than thirty times in the Quran (2:20, 2:284, 3:165, etc.).

The same root gives al-qadar (divine decree), one of the six articles of Islamic faith. The Prophet ﷺ said in the Hadith of Jibril: 'And to believe in qadar, its good and its evil' (Muslim). The Quran also uses the word in 'Indeed, We sent it down on the Night of Decree (laylat al-qadr)' (97:1), the night that is better than a thousand months.

As a personal name, Qadir is normally combined with Abd: Abd al-Qadir (Servant of the Capable). The most famous bearer of the combined form is Sheikh Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani (d. 561 AH/1166 CE) of Baghdad, the great Hanbali scholar and founder of the Qadiriyya Sufi order. The standalone form Qadir is widely used as well. Top Arab, Pakistani, Maghrebi, Algerian, and Turkish boys name. Variants: Qadeer, Qaadir, Kadir (Turkish). The Arabic is قَادِر.
