What Misbah means
Lamp, lantern — directly Quranic. The word misbah appears in one of the most luminous and most-discussed verses of the entire Quran, Ayat al-Nur (the Verse of Light, 24:35):
'Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The example of His light is like a niche within which is a lamp (misbah). The lamp is within glass, the glass as if it were a pearly star, lit from a blessed olive tree, neither of the east nor of the west, whose oil would almost glow even if untouched by fire. Light upon light. Allah guides to His light whom He wills.'
The classical commentators have read this verse on many levels: as a description of Allah's guidance reaching the believer's heart, as the light of prophecy passing through the niche of the human breast, as the symbol of the Quran itself. In every reading the misbah is the focal point — the steady, contained flame that illuminates without being consumed.
To name a son or daughter Misbah is to name them after that lamp: a presence that gives light to the room, that does not need to compete with other lights to be seen.
