Dictionary Meaning

What Maymouna means

Maymouna (ميمونة, Maymūna) is the name of Maymūna bint al-Ḥārith al-Hilāliyya (d. 681 CE), the last of the Mothers of the Believers — the eleventh and final wife of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, whom he married in 7 AH / 629 CE during ʿUmrat al-Qaḍāʾ. She lived in Madīna into the reign of Muʿāwiya and is buried at Sarif, on the road between Makka and Madīna, where she fell ill and died. The name comes from the root م-ي-م-ن — the root of yumn (blessing, good fortune) and al-yamīn (the right hand — the side associated with blessing in Qur'anic imagery, e.g. Sūrat al-Wāqiʿa's aṣḥāb al-yamīn, "Companions of the Right"). Maymūna therefore means the blessed one, fortunate, of auspicious omen. Variants: Maymouna (Maghrebi-French), Maymouna, Maimuna, Maimunah, Meimuna, the Turkish Meymune. A name that places the daughter under the same prophetic household as the last Mother of the Believers, and prays for her a life of constant blessing.
