Dictionary Meaning
What Aminu means
Aminu is the Hausa form of أمين (Amīn) — trustworthy, faithful, safe to be entrusted. From the Arabic root أ-م-ن (which produces īmān — faith, amāna — a trust held in keeping, and aman — safety), Amīn is one of the original titles of the Prophet ﷺ. Even before the revelation began at Ḥirāʾ, the people of Quraysh called him al-Amīn — the trustworthy one — because of his unbroken record of returning what was deposited with him.
Aminu is among the most common masculine names in northern Nigeria, Niger, and the Hausa-Fulani diaspora across West Africa. Notable bearers include Aminu Kano, the celebrated Nigerian populist political leader who founded the People's Redemption Party; Aminu Tambuwal, former Speaker of the Nigerian House of Representatives and Governor of Sokoto State; and Aminu Dantata, the businessman and philanthropist. The name is so culturally resonant that the country's largest international airport in Kano is named in honour of Aminu Kano.

The Portrait
What Aminu asks of its bearer
Aminu carries the Prophet's pre-prophetic title into a Hausa Muslim register. The bearer is asked to be the kind of person to whom others entrust what is precious — money, secrets, children, the truth — and to live so that the trust is never broken. The opening Alif and closing -u give the name a steady, anchored quality: trust that does not move.
