Aminata is the West African Fula and Mandé form of آمنة (Āmina) — 'safe, trusted, protected,' from the Arabic root أ-م-ن (the same root as īmān, faith, and amīn, trustworthy). The final -ta reflects the Fulfulde and Bambara feminine ending; the name appears similarly in West African Mandinka, Wolof, and Soninke as Aminata or Aminatu.

The name belongs first to Āmina bint Wahb, the mother of the Prophet ﷺ, who died when Muḥammad was six years old.
