What Abu Bakr means
The Truthful (As-Siddiq) — first Caliph of Islam, the Prophet's closest companion. His real name was Abdullah ibn Abi Quhafa — Abu Bakr (father of the young camel) was his kunya. He was the first adult male to accept Islam. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'If I were to take a close friend, I would have taken Abu Bakr' (Bukhari). He was the Hijra companion: 'He was the second of the two when they were in the cave' (9:40). When the Prophet was dying, he chose Abu Bakr to lead the prayers — and the companions chose Abu Bakr as the first Caliph.
Abu Bakr is named in the Quran — not by name but by description: 'The second of the two when they were in the cave, when he said to his companion: Do not grieve, indeed Allah is with us' (9:40).
