Dictionary Meaning

What Saifullah means

Sword of Allah — Saif (sword) + Allah, joined as Saifullah (سيف الله). The title was given by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to Khalid ibn al-Walid (RA), the brilliant general whose conversion to Islam was a turning point in the early conquests. After the Battle of Mu'tah, where three commanders fell in succession and Khalid took up the standard, the Prophet said: 'The standard was held by Zayd, then Ja'far, then Ibn Rawahah — they all fell as martyrs. Then it was taken up by a sword from the swords of Allah, and Allah granted them victory at his hand' (Bukhari).

From that day Khalid was known as Saifullah al-Maslul — 'the unsheathed sword of Allah.' He commanded the Muslim armies in the Ridda Wars after the Prophet's death and led the spectacular conquests of Iraq and the Levant under Abu Bakr and Umar. He died in his bed in Homs, lamenting that no battlefield had granted him the martyrdom he sought.

To name a son Saifullah is to name him after that title — to call him to courage in defence of right, to remind him that the sword of a Muslim is never personal but always in Allah's name. Top Pakistani, Afghan, and Arab Muslim boys name. Variants: Saifullah, Sayfullah, Seifullah.
