Section 4 · What Families Say
What People Usually Mean by This Name
From the Arabic عثمان (Uthman), classical Arabic meaning young bustard or baby of any of several large birds in the older lexicographical readings, the name is honoured above all as that of Uthman ibn Affan (RA), the third Caliph of Islam.
Outhmane is the Mauritanian and Maghrebi French orthography of the classical name. Uthman was called Dhu al-Nurayn (the possessor of two lights) because he married two daughters of the Prophet ﷺ, Ruqayya and Umm Kulthum. He commissioned the standardised codex of the Quran, the mushaf that has been the basis of every Quran printed since.
In choosing Outhmane a family names a son after the caliph who preserved the Book for all subsequent generations.
