What People Usually Mean by This Name
Hafsa (حفصة, Ḥafṣa) is one of the most revered names in early Islamic history, that of Ḥafṣa bint ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb (d. 665 CE / 45 AH), daughter of the second caliph and wife of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, honoured among the Ummahāt al-Muʾminīn (Mothers of the Believers). She was famously the keeper of the first authoritative compilation of the Qur'an: after Abū Bakr ordered Zayd ibn Thābit to gather the revelation into a single muṣḥaf, the codex was entrusted to her safekeeping until ʿUthmān used it as the basis for the standard recension. The root ح-ف-ص carries the senses of preserving, gathering, protecting, fittingly, the name belonged to the woman who preserved the Word. The Prophet ﷺ said of her, "She fasts much and prays much" (Nasāʾī). Hafsa was also the name of the prolific Andalusian poet Ḥafṣa bint al-Ḥājj al-Rakūniyya (d. 1190 CE) of Granada. Hafsa is the standard English-language Muslim spelling; Hafsah, Hafza, and the Turkish Hafza are common variants.
