Where the Name Comes From

أ-و-س

أ-و-س. From the root ʾ-w-s meaning to give, to compensate, to make whole. The diminutive form Uways carries the sense of 'little wolf' in old Arab usage and 'tender giver' in spiritual usage, fixed forever by Uways al-Qaranī.

Section 2 · Ilm ul Huroof

Read Letter by Letter

Awais's Alif of origin and Waw of connection open onto the Ya of yearning and the Seen of secret, naming a hidden longing kept close. The four letters together describe one whose love is unseen yet binding, a quiet thread tying him to what he loves.

Section 3 · Synthesis

What This Reading Says About You

Awais's letters draw from many elements at once, a full palette, not a single note. This is a name that asks its bearer to hold contradictions gracefully: warmth and steadiness, movement and depth. Running through the reading is Al-Ahad, the One, carried by a person as a singular, undivided presence. A person named Awais carries a full weather system inside a single quiet chest.

Section 4 · What Families Say

What People Usually Mean by This Name

Uwais, the Yemeni follower (tabi'i) the Prophet ﷺ honoured by name without ever meeting him in this world. From the Arabic root أ-و-س. The name belongs above all to Uwais al-Qarani (RA, d. 37 AH), the Yemeni shepherd of the Banu Murad whom the Prophet ﷺ described in a famous prediction to Umar ibn al-Khattab and Ali ibn Abi Talib (RA): 'A man will come to you from Yemen called Uwais, he has a mother, and he is the most devoted of all servants to her. He had a white spot on his body that he prayed to Allah to remove, and Allah removed it except for the size of a dirham. Whenever you meet him, ask him to seek forgiveness for you' (Muslim).

Uwais never met the Prophet ﷺ in person, when the call to Islam reached Yemen, his mother was old and blind, and he refused to leave her side. He cared for her until her death and then made his way to Madinah only after the Prophet had passed away. Umar (RA) sought him out years later among the Yemeni pilgrims and asked him to make du'a for him. The Prophet's recognition of Uwais, across distance, without meeting, became the model in Sufi tradition of the uwaysi connection: the spiritual link transmitted without physical contact.
