The Quran does not use asad as a name but invokes the image in Surah al-Muddaththir to describe the disbelievers who flee from the Quran: 'As if they were frightened donkeys fleeing from a lion (qaswara)' (74:50-51), qaswara being a synonym of asad in classical poetry.
The title Asad Allah (the Lion of Allah) was given by the Prophet ﷺ to two Companions. The first was Hamza ibn Abd al-Muttalib (RA), the Prophet's uncle and milk-brother, called Asad Allah wa Asad Rasulih, 'the Lion of Allah and the Lion of His Messenger', for his ferocity in defence of Islam at Badr and his martyrdom at Uhud. The second was Ali ibn Abi Talib (RA), called Asad Allah al-Ghalib (the Victorious Lion of Allah) for his unmatched bravery, especially at the conquest of Khaybar where he tore the gate of the fortress off its hinges.
